Astray dog that came close to death has found a forever home with a woman who fell in love with him the moment she saw him on TV.

The dog was struggling for his life after he had fallen through ice in Lake Michigan. A passerby saw the frightening ordeal and called police. Officers quickly came to the scene and pulled the pooch to safety, much like the rescue team who saved a horse from a similar situation in Pittsburgh.

The dog was taken to the Humane Society, where he was appropriately named Michigan. But no one came to claim the dog after he recovered from hypothermia.

That was actually good news for a dog lover named Brenda Thompson, who wanted to bring Michigan into her own home.

“I threw some clothes on and came straight here. I was here pretty much every day since I saw that story,” she told TMJ4.

Thompson, who also adopted another dog right after Hurricane Katrina, made sure everything was set for Michigan before she’d bring him home.

“The first thing I’m going to do is take him on a nice long walk,” Thompson says. “His bed is all made up. He’s got brand-new bowls and toys waiting for him. He’s good to go. I think this is the beginning of a great friendship.”
