Sweet Cashier Cheers Up Mom Of Special Needs Baby
Being a mother of a special needs baby is hard enough without others looking in and judging. That’s what happened to this mom while she was out shopping, but a special woman brightened her day!
A Stressful Day Out
Suzie Skougard brought her daughter Carly, who was born with Down syndrome, with her to the grocery store one cold, blustery day. That’s when a complete stranger approached their cart and reprimanded Suzie for not putting socks on young Carly on such a cold day.
What the stranger didn’t know, nor had the decency to ask, was that Carly had kicked off her socks repeatedly, just as many children stubbornly do, and was being extremely fussy. The socks weren’t going to stay on no matter what Suzie tried!
Just Not Their Day
After picking herself up from the stranger’s tirade, Suzie and her daughter continued shopping. But to her dismay, a store employee completely ignored Suzie when she asked where to find an item on her list.
To top off the terrible trip, a rude customer blew past her, almost knocking Suzie to her feet. Carly was starting to fuss since it was past her bedtime and it seemed like the world was turning on her. They finally made it to the checkout line when they were greeted by a friendly face.
Making A New Friend
An employee of the grocery store, who also has Down Syndrome, smiled and gave the frustrated mother a kind reminder that not all people are bad. In fact, some people have enough heart for the rest of us! Suzie shared the emotional experience on her Facebook page.
“Today as we were leaving the store, she said, ‘I have Down syndrome like her, and I have a big heart.'”
Suzie smiled back at the woman and agreed that she did have a big heart. This heartwarming interaction reminded Suzie that Carly will grow up to be a loving and contributing member of society, no matter how nasty others may be!
More Than They’ll Ever Know
The amazing special needs grocer made a disheartening trip to the store so much better, and all it took was a little kindness and a smile.
Destined To A Life Of Love
Suzie doesn’t want other people to absorb the negativity in the world, like what she received from the rude patrons at the grocery store. Instead, she wants them to take a lesson from her new friend.
“Some people feel like those with Down syndrome don’t contribute anything meaningful to society, but amidst all of the Grinches today, [the special needs employee] stood apart. By just being her, she gave us an amazing gift. A smile.”
Sometimes a smile is all someone needs to keep going. We have no idea what’s going on beyond the surface!
