Heart-stopping Photos of Russian Daredevils Taken Without Any Safety Equipment

Be it climbing up as high as a 380-meter crane or a 22-storey building – two young Russians have got it all, and more, on their cameras. Vitaly Raskalov and Alexander Remnov call themselves skywalkers, and take incredible, vertigo-inducing pictures of each other on top of the highest buildings in Moscow and some other cities in Russia.

Armed with no special protective equipment but a camera, these thrill-seekers plank on top of the Russian Academy of Sciences or enjoy a nocturnal panorama from a turret in the Kiev railway station just for a good shot. It’s hard to imagine what these guys feel, when their pictures are enough to make one dizzy.

Posting in his blog, Vitaly was extremely happy about conquering the tower of the Moscow State University, which is generally protected with security cameras and special entry codes:

“For three years, I thought that it is impossible to get here, but as they say – everything is possible, the main thing is to want it bad enough.”

Beautiful, but don’t take this as an encouragement!

Some of The Best Pictures Of The Year 2012

So far, 2012 has produced some amazing photography, a point more than proved by a series of images compiled by one Internet user.

Reddit user stoopidtrooper posted this gallery of 48-images from photo sharing site Imgur on Monday. It captures some of the most amazing photos taken in 2012.

From seahorses to solar eclipses, sleeping whales to space jumps, the photos span the breadth of human experience. There are intimate encounters between humans and nature alongside sublime panoramas.

Some of these photos made use of techniques such as long or multiple exposures, which enhance their artistry. And others are just unbelievable.

It’s not often that the Web’s collective consciousness rises up and delivers a collection that’s this breathtaking. So without further delay, here are some of the most amazing photos of 2012.

Wild animal portraits by Brad Wilson

Santa Fe, New Mexico-based photographer Brad Wilson decided last year that he wanted to photograph something “a little less predictable,” so he decided to shoot fine art studio portraits of wild animals using all the things he has learned through years of shooting human portraiture.

He began calling up wildlife sanctuaries and handlers that provide animals for Hollywood movies. Once he had the animals he needed, he signed fat insurance policies and liability contracts (e.g. if an animal dies during a shoot, Wilson owed $500K), and got to work on a 90×120-foot sound stage in a Los Angeles studio lot.

The behind-the-scenes video above offers a look at how the project came together.

The Telegraph writes that the promise of food helped with controlling the portrait subjects:

His only trick was food, and each animal came with their own favourite snack. Some were fairly innocuous – blueberries for the spider monkey, for example – but the big cats required 30lb of raw meat each. It was “a little overwhelming”, says Wilson. “They arrive having not eaten for a day or two, and that’s how you direct them around the set.”

Here’s a collection of photos that resulted from the shoot:

1. Although many of his “model” – wild animals, he photographs them not in their natural habitat. Pictured: cougar.

2. Animals are transported in his studio. In the photo: zebra.

3. These animals are used to humans, and Wilson knows that they will not attack him. That is why it can take a picture of them with the most up close. In the photo: cheetah.

4. Of course, some of the measures still need to be taken. In the photo: a chimpanzee.
