Police Sergeant Retires After 28 Years In Tear-Jerking Clip
ince the late 80s, Douglas Hogate, Sr. has served as a police officer in Salem City, New Jersey. In 2014, his dream came true when he was promoted to Sergeant. He told NJ.com, “I’ve never wanted to be chief, never even wanted to be lieutenant,” he said. “I love being on the road and always wanted to be a road sergeant. Now, with all the patience I’ve had, it’s finally here.”
But recently, after 28 years of dedicating his life to the job, Sgt. Hogate retired. In the touching video below, watch the incredible moment he officially signs off the air at the end of his last shift — calling in his final Code 3.
“It is with great pleasure to announce that as of today, March 24, 2016 at 1800 hours, after 28 years of service, Salem City Police Sgt. Douglas Hogate Sr., Badge #612, is retiring and has given his final Code 3. The Salem County 9-1-1 Center would like to wish Sgt. Hogate a Happy Retirement & wish him all the best!”
The most heartwarming thing about this moment is that Douglas Hogate Jr. — his own son — is the voice on the other end of the radio. For nine years, he has been a dispatcher at Salem County Dispatch Center. I can’t think of a better send-off than this. His son must be so proud to walk in his dad’s shoes.
