Photographs of a New York City Plunged Into Darkness After the Storm

After Hurricane Sandy devastated New York City earlier this week, photographer Randy Scott Slavin ventured around various areas that had been plunged into darkness due to power outages. He shot eerie long-exposure photographs that make the city look like a ghost town. The series is titled “NYC Unplugged.”

Although the long-exposure times offer us a glimpse into the darkness, Slavin writes that it was pitch black in many places:
“New York City is always bright. Street lights, business marquees, light from apartments and car headlights merge to light every corner of the city streets, even on the darkest nights. It is the night after NYC was decimated by Hurricane Sandy, downtown NYC is in the midst of a power outage that has plunged it into complete darkness. I felt the call to hit the eerily dark streets and show New York as it is rarely seen. Trekking around with my tripod I was able to get the long exposures necessary to see in the dark.”

More Than Human by Tim Flash

“More Than Human” is the title of the latest series of pictures by photographer Tim Flach which highlights the physical characteristics of different animals. Each portrait highlights the personality and clear, untamed qualities. With well planned lighting and origins viewer can see the details of a panda’s fur, the lines on a monkey’s palm and the intense gaze of a gorilla. Say the least, very intriguing series of photographs that makes you start thinking about the animals’ gestures in comparison with man.

Animated by telling gestures, These photographs place us in an intimate relationship withtheir protagonist.

Below are some of my favorite photos. All images can be found on the photographer’s website  , and a very interesting interview with Tim Flach on the project can be found at More Intelligent Life’s website .

Tunnel Of Lights In Japan Shows Brilliant Display Made From Millions Of LEDs

A tunnel of lights in Japan that opened this week shows waves of colors made up from more than 7 million LED lights, drawing international attention and hordes of tourists.

Dubbed “the best light show in the country,” the tunnel of lights has become a popular site on the internet, with pictures showing people walking through glowing rows of LED lights popular on blogs and news sites. These pictures showed the LED lights in a number of displays, creating tunnels that surround viewers with bright colorful lights and natural scenes like Mount Fuji and a rainbow.

The tunnel of lights in Japan will be open until March 31, 2013, but have already been a huge hit with tourists. As Joanna Tocher of Wide Island View noted, “if you can shut out the noise of the hundreds of people around you it really does feel like you’re stepping into another world.”

The lights cover vast surfaces, rising into the air and even covering water, My Modern Met reported. The biggest hit is the tunnel of light, which make people feel as if they’re walking through some kind of magic portal.

This inspirational idea came from Christopher Moloney who runs a movie-photo blog dedicated to Recreating Old Movie Scenes in today’s scenario. He uses a freeze frame from classic films like Taxi Driver, Scarface, and The French Connection and superimposses it over the actual locations. Calling this art FILMography, Moloney has over two hundred such photos archieved so far and he continues to inspire us with more.
