Paintings by David Agenjo

Born in Madrid, 1977, David Agenjo is a self-taught artist living and working in London. After a brief career as a graphic designer, he now devotes himself entirely to painting. He has been exhibited in New York, London, Dublin and Madrid.

His primary focus is on the human body, communicating a personal engagement through colour and texture allowing us to reconnect with the architecture of living beings. He develops each new painting on top of his previously used palette, fusing the given abstract random colours and textures with new layers of figurative depiction to create a new organic composition. This interlinks the whole body of his work, each painting affecting the next in a natural reproductive-like process.

Creative Road Signs Feature Funny Unexpected Messages

The majority of the work by American artist Joel Ross involves text installations in public spaces. Please Chase Me is an ongoing series in which Ross produces pieces that mimic roadside signage and places them along various roads, from single-lane farm roads to major highways. As a result, the work becomes a temporary art exhibit, viewed mainly by people who unknowingly encounter the work along their travels.

The messages are collected from places like advertisements, newspapers, radio reports, t-shirts, posters, snippets of overheard conversations, and then interpreted by the artist. Sometimes viewers will see a direct quote, while other times the messages are mixtures or fabrications based on a collective combination of Ross’s inspiration.

The installations are not sanctioned by anyone and so they do not last very long. Ross says, “The signs are left on site until they are removed by authorities or by citizens. Most of the signs are removed within 24 hours. A series of photographs of these installations and related works on paper become a record of these events as well as the primary point of engagement with their second audience, the art-going public.”

Amazing Masks Made of Metal Type, Bolts, and Screws

Ontario-based artist Dale Dunning combines typography and sculpting to create his intricately welded bronze and aluminum sculptures. The metallic masks are made of hundreds of typefaces, like a figurative stamp. The letters that make up each androgynous face serves as a symbol of communication and knowledge. The sculptor’s creations vary in texture, whether they are presenting a grid of fonts or a meld of thousands of bolts, screws, and washers.

Dunning focuses on the head without the distraction of limbs and the rest of the body because the head itself is an emblem of the mind. He says, “The head is universally recognized, easy to identify with. We live in our heads, see, feel, and experience the world in our head. It serves as the foundation upon which I can develop various paths to explore.”

Check out the video, below, to hear the artist reflect upon his own work.
