Photographer transforms ordinary people in epic athletes using perfect lighting and a rain machine

Montreal-based photographer Benjamin Von Wong is always up for a challenge, as seen in his underwater shipwreck portraits and his creative photos of a man on fire. His most recent project that he shared with us was an answer to SmugMug’s request to take black-and-white portraits of their employees “doing something sporty,” as the photo-sharing website planned to feature the images in their company gym. Armed with a homemade rain machine and $20,000 worth of lighting equipment, Von Wong transformed everyday people into super athletes in a series of incredibly dynamic, striking photos.
Von Wong used “Hollywood-level lighting” instead of digital retouching in order to achieve his extraordinary shots. He says, “Once set up properly, anyone can look absolutely phenomenal straight out of camera. Muscles beautifully defined, faces perfectly lit. . . No tummy tucking or Photoshop funny business needed, only the small tweaks: light, contrast & colour.” But the true key behind his images was getting ordinary office workers, programmers, and grandparents to believe in themselves. With plenty of enthusiasm and encouragement, Von Wong gave his subjects the confidence to become extreme fitness models in front of the camera.

To read more about the photographer’s process, check out his blog post and his Medium post titled “Ordinary people, Hollywood budgets.”

We were lucky enough to have the opportunity to ask Von Wong a couple questions about the photo shoot. Be sure to read that exclusive interview below.

How did you direct your subjects during the shoot to bring out their confidence and inner athletes?
I think that people start bringing the best out for you once they start to trust you. It’s always an awkward experience standing in front of a camera but if you take the time to make people feel comfortable and awesome, that ends up showing on camera. For each shot, I made sure to ask them what they were most comfortable with and slowly tried to guide them to the best shot that I could possibly take. Of course, showing them great results along the way helps… and never show the bad shots!

What were the employees’ reactions upon seeing themselves transformed into superstars in the final images?
I think they absolutely loved it. Though they work for a photography company, they had never ever seen themselves look like that before! The best reactions were from those who missed out on the shoot when they saw the final results… !

20 Places You Should Visit In 2015

It’s time to start thinking about planning your dream trip next year. So where should you go?

We looked at major developments, cultural trends, and global festivals to find the hottest places to travel around the world in 2015.

From the Philippines to Peru, here are the best places to travel next year.

Japan will become a bargain destination for travelers.

Tourism in Japan has taken a hit since the 2011 tsunami hit the country’s coast and ricocheted into a nuclear disaster at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant. Since then, the Japanese government has cleaned up the countryside and launched a massive public-relations campaign encouraging tourists to come visit. Pair that with a sharp decline in the value of the Japanese currency, and you get a country that’s ripe for tourism.

Traditionally one of the most expensive countries in the world, Japan is quickly becoming a bargain destination that’s luring in travelers looking for a deal.  More than 11 million visitors have traveled to Japan so far this year, with more expected. Most tourists are heading to Tokyo, which is also busy preparing for the 2020 summer Olympics.

Lima, Peru has been slowly building its reputation as a city for foodies, cementing its status most recently when the Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants Awards gave the coveted top spot to the city’s Central restaurant. In total, eight of 50 restaurants on the prestigious list were in Lima.

The Peruvian city is home to everything from Michelin-starred restaurants to hole-in-the-wall cevicherias that will continue to draw in foodies from around the world.

“Frozen” has made over $1.2 billion for Disney, and with its increased merchandising andrumors of a sequel, the “Frozen” craze will only continue to grow. Set in Arendelle, a fictional kingdom in Norway, “Frozen” shows a gorgeous landscape of lakes, waterfalls, mountains, and fjords. Fans of the animated film are now seeking out real-life Arendelle in Norway. The country has seen a huge growth in tourism since the release of the film, with tour operators reporting a 40% increase in sales.

Bergen, a city on the west coast, was the inspiration for the film. Voss is also popular with fans for its nearby fjords, glaciers, rivers, and lakes. With its small fishing villages and breathtaking cliffs, the Lofoten Islands will also attract Frozen fans.

A mosque in Isfahan, Iran.

Iran is becoming a tourist hotspot, with tour operators reporting significant increases in tourists booking trips to the Middle Eastern country. Perhaps that’s because of a slight thaw in its relationships with the West, or simply because of the allure of exploring a little-known destination with few other tourists around.

Note that Americans are allowed to visit Iran, but they must travel with an official tour guide or get their itinerary approved by the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA). Travel within Iran is considered safe if you tour responsibly, even though the U.S. Department of State has issued a travel warning to the country.

The country is home to ancient cities with breathtaking mosques and gorgeous natural landscapes. Popular cities with tourists are Isfahan and Tehran, but people also travel to see the ruins at Persepolis, the tombs at Shiraz, and the beaches on the Caspian Sea.

Forget the massive, personality-devoid cruise ships. The river cruise industry is booming these days. These cruises offer a more refined, intimate, and cultured experience than the behemoth ocean liners. They also allow guests to embark right in the center of the cities, and enjoy riverbank scenery the entire ride.

Luxury cruise-ship operator Viking River Cruises has carved a niche for itself as the top river-cruise ship company. It offers cruises all over the world, filled with unique cultural activities like lectures, language lessons, and demonstrations like cuckoo-clock-making, that are meant to shed light on the destinations visited. Even the food aboard the ship reflects the local culture, showcasing regional specialties from each destination.

Namibia is poised for a tourism boom.

With its diverse wildlife, colonial architecture, and stunning landscape filled with mountains, deserts, and beaches, Namibia is hands-down one of the most picturesque countries in the world.

It’s also one of the safest countries in Africa and was named the hottest travel destination of the future by LoveHomeSwap. Travelers can go on safari, compete in the grueling Namib Desert Challenge, or explore the country’s vast sand dunes.

The Australian capital is less glitzy than its more famous neighbors.

Canberra, Australia’s capital city, was named the best place to live in the world by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, according to the New York Times.

Located in southeastern Australia, Canberra doesn’t have the glitzy buildings and beautiful beaches of Sydney, but it does feel quainter and more peaceful — even though it’s the country’s capital. The city is set on an artificial lake and is home to Australia’s Parliament House and High Court, as well as several great cultural institutions like the National Gallery and National Museum.

Berlin’s still got it.

It’s no secret that Berlin is one of the coolest cities in Europe, but it’s only recently that it’s really blown up as the quintessential hipster destination. The center of all that? Kreuzberg, a central neighborhood that straddles both east and west Berlin.

Visitors to Berlin can check out some hipster hotspots, like White Trash fast food, an ironic restaurant, club, and tattoo parlor; Meschugge Berlin, a nightclub that feels like an Israeli dance party; and Stattbad Wedding/Stattbar, a nightclub inside an old swimming pool.

Lithuania will join the eurozone in 2015, which means that travelers will be able to use a convenient, continentwide currency.

Explore the capital city of Vilnius, whose historic center is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or relax on a beach at the Curonian Spit National Park. There are also historic castles and museums filled with treasures all over the country.

Cape Town is cheaper than ever.

Traditionally, South Africa has been an expensive destination to visit, but recent currency fluctuations mean that it’s becoming a cheaper destination for tourists.

An upgraded public-transportation system, new hotels, and new urban infrastructure projects like the Fan Walk will make Cape Town much more tourist-friendly. Even safaris to Kruger National Park seem to be more affordable now. For even better discounts, visit in the spring or fall (March to May, September and October), when it’s not peak tourist season.

Florence, Italy, will continue to be one of the world’s best cities for travelers.

The Duomo, Florence.

Florence is a perennial favorite, but 2015 is sure to bring even more visitors to the Italian city, since it was recently named the world’s best city for travelers by Conde Nast Traveler.

It’s a historic jewelbox that’s full of incredible art, museums, shops, and restaurants. The Duomo, the city’s main cathedral, is the most iconic tourist attraction here, but there are tons of other world-famous spots, like the Uffizi museum, the Accademia (home to Michelangelo’s David), and the Ponte Vecchio.

Curacao will be more accessible from North America with new direct flights.

Curacao is a gorgeous Caribbean island that’s tucked between Aruba and Bonaire. But until recently, it was pretty inaccessible, as there were few direct flights from major international destinations. Now that’s all about to change.

Jetblue just launched nonstop flights to the island from New York twice a week, and early next year, Air Canada will launch direct flights from Montreal to Curaçao every Thursday. To accommodate these new visitors, new hotels are being built, like a Courtyard by Marriott, while others are expanding and undergoing renovations.

Located in the South China Sea at the southernmost tip of China, Hainan Island is one of the fastest-growing tourism destinations in the country. It has seen a huge increase in hotel-room capacity in the last few years, and it plans to keep building new hotels and increase international flights. The majority of tourists come from China and Russia, but Hainan has been embarking on a campaign to attract more international tourists.

The beaches are the main attraction here, but there are also several historic temples, tombs, and forts. It’s also a big surfing destination that’s hosted the Hainan Wanning International Surfing Festival for three years in a row.

Tasmania is just off the south coast of Australia.

Lonely Planet named Tasmania one of the best regions to explore in 2015. Located south of the main continent of Australia, the island-state is famous for its gorgeous landscape, wild animals, heritage estates, premium wines, and some of the best mountain biking in the world.

Adventure travelers will love exploring Tasmania’s rugged coastline and wilderness. In 2015, the second stretch of the Three Capes Track will open, allowing people to trek through the bush on foot and explore places like the sea cliffs of Tasman National Park.

But Tasmania isn’t just for adventurers. Foodies and oenophiles will enjoy tasting the excellent cool-climate wines, while couples will find plenty of opportunities for romance.

Flushing, Queens.

Queens, New York has gotten some attention recently. As prices in Manhattan and Brooklyn have gotten so high, people are rediscovering this sometimes overlooked New York City borough. Queens is one of the most diverse urban areas in the world. It’s home to immigrants from over 100 countries who speak more than 138 languages. All that diversity means one thing: great food.

Head to Flushing for Chinese, Astoria for Greek, or Little India in Jackson Heights for Indian food. There’s also amazing Czech food at the Bohemian Hall in Astoria, incredible Dominican food in Elmhurst, and succulent Jamaican cuisine in Queens Village, to name just a few neighborhoods. Chef and TV personality Andrew Zimmern told us that Queens is the best food city in the world.

The World Cup may be over, but Rio de Janeiro, Brazil is still in prep mode as it gears up to host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.

The city will use all of the new arenas, hotels, shops, and restaurants that were built to accommodate the international crowds who came for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. But 2015 will be a relative bargain, since visitors won’t have to contend with the crowds who will descend on the city for the Olympics in 2016.

Croatia saw a huge boom in tourism after the hit series “Game of Thrones” filmed several seasons there, so it’s only natural that Northern Ireland, another filming location for the show, will see similar results after Season 5, which is filming there, airs. Northern Ireland doubles as Westeros, the kingdom featured in GoT. The Stangford Castle Ward Estate in County Down doubled as Winterfell and the Dark Hedges in County Antrim doubled as Kings Road.

The UK country is full of incredible natural wonders, like the Giant’s Causeway and the Slieve League Cliffs, as well as ruined medieval castles like Dunluce Castle.

A few years ago, Myanmar opened its doors to the public for the first time in years. Since then, the Southeast Asian country has slowly been developing its infrastructure, building new hotels and restaurants, and improving roads and buildings. The country still has a long way to go, but that hasn’t stopped millions of travelers from around the world from visiting.

Yangon (formerly Rangoon) is the major city, but tourists also tend to visit Bagan, where they can go hot-air ballooning over incredible ancient temples. The country has more than 1,250 miles of coastline, and some of the best beaches in Asia.

Ljubljana is one of Europe’s cheapest capitals.

Sandwiched between Italy, Croatia, Hungary, and Austria, Slovenia is a small country that hasn’t really been discovered by tourists — yet. It’s a beautiful country with great food, historic cities, and stunning landscapes, and it’s also one of the cheapest countries to visit in Europe.

Ljubljana, the capital, is one of the most underrated destinations in Europe, with a quaint Old Town, beautiful bridges spanning the Ljubljanica River, and a historic castle that towers above the city.

Incredible Aerial Photographs Of New York City Taken At An Astounding Height

Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Vincent Laforet has spent the past 15 year taking daring helicopter rides to capture some of the most incredible aerial images from around the world.

But his latest photo mission — to photograph New York City at night from above — was “the scariest of his life,” he tells Business Insider. In order to take the photographs, Laforet had to dangle from the door of helicopter hovering at a dizzying 7,500 feet above the ground (an uncommonly high altitude for a helicopter), secured only by a harness, and shoot straight down.

Laforet’s photo series, titled “Gotham 7.5K,” reveals an incredible new vantage point of America’s busiest city.

Laforet has always dreamed of capturing these photographs of New York, he says.

“I’ve been wanting to take these pictures since I was a teenager, peering out of a window of a jet liner,” Laforet says. “Every time I landed at LaGuardia or JFK, I would see incredible lights in the city and in the streets of New York and I’ve always wanted to try to find a way to make these photographs.”

But it just wasn’t possible, until now.

“I think it’s a pretty unique series of photographs, because technology is allowing us to make these images for the first time,” Laforet says. “Just a few years ago, you would never see this level of color and detail. The fact that you can get a pretty clean image at that high of a sensitivity is pretty remarkable.”

Laforet used cameras such as the Canon 1DX and the Mamiya Leaf Credo 50 MP to take some of the clearest photographs ever taken above New York.

Screen Shot 2015 01 12 at 7.27.46 PMCourtesy of Vincent Laforet

To take the photographs, Laforet had to fly at a unique altitude as well. “We were actually flying above all of the airline traffic landing at JFK, LGA, and Newark airports,” Laforet wrote on Storehouse.

If they had gone just a few thousand more feet up, they would have needed oxygen masks.

‘When you’re that high, you think to yourself, ‘if anything were to happen, it would be a very long fall,’ ” Laforet says. “It’s definitely one of the scariest flights I’ve ever done, especially when you’re hanging out of the helicopter and shooting straight down.”

Helicopters shake pretty significantly while in the air and, even with fancy cameras and special tools, getting such clear images is a remarkable feat. “Between the way I hold the camera, the gyroscope, and a little bit of luck, you’re hoping to get one out of every five images sharp,” Laforet says.

From above, the city has always reminded him of brain synapses.

“I was recently on assignment for Men’s Health Magazine and I proposed shooting the city from an unusually high altitude so that we could capture the lines that are formed by the streets of New York at night,” Laforet wrote on Storehouse. “It was an article about psychology and I’ve always thought that from a high altitude the streets looked like brain synapses.”

8 Real-World Locations That Inspired Disney Movies

The magical worlds inhabited by Disney characters have inspired children for generations, but did you know that the creative teams behind these visions were often themselves inspired by authentic villages, castles, and vistas?

We took a journey through the Disney film archives, matching up enchanting fairy tales with their real-world locations.

1. Disney location: The castle from Tangled
Real-life location: Mont Saint-Michel in Normandy

French artist Laurent Ben-Mimoun looked to the romantic oil paintings of 18th-century artist Fragonard to create the concept art for Tangled. He started with the vision of a Renaissance castle from which Rapunzel could let down her hair, recalling Mont Saint-Michel in Normandy. As production progressed, he added medieval and French Renaissance influences–like small round towers inspired by Château de Chenonceau–as well as hints of modern architecture, like the triangular composition of the Century City Twin Towers in Los Angeles.

2. Disney location: Sleeping Beauty’s castle
Real-life location: Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany

One of Germany’s most famous landmarks also served as the inspiration for Sleeping Beauty’s castle, both in the 1959 film and at Disneyland itself. Before construction began in Anaheim, Walt Disney visited Neuschwanstein Castle, a 19th-century Romanesque Revival structure, on a European tour. He was inspired by the bright colors and majestic setting of to create the fairytale castle at the heart of Disneyland.

3. Disney location: Paradise Falls from Up
Real-life location: Angel Falls in Venezuela

Updirector Pete Docter traveled with a team of Pixar creatives to Venezuela’s tepuis (table-top mountains) to gather inspiration for the lost world of Paradise Falls. Their trip culminated with a trip to Angel Falls, the world’s tallest waterfall, which the team recorded with thousands of photographs, videos, and sketches before taking that inspiration home to create the bucket-list destination for the film’s elderly hero Carl Frederikson (voiced by Ed Asner). “My feeling is that the location is also a character in the movie,” Docter told USA Today.

4. Disney location: Pacha’s village in The Emperor’s New Groove
Real-life location: Machu Picchu

The mystical Inca ruins, perched 8,000 feet above sea level in Peru, served as the no-so-subtle inspiration for Pacha’s village in The Emperor’s New Groove, where Emperor Kuzco has grand plans to build a Kuzcotopia theme park. Ironically, Machu Picchu has become a major Peruvian tourist attraction since the Inca abandoned this site in the 16th century. Adventure travelers hike (or bus) to see the Temple of the Sun, the Room of the Three Windows, and Inti Watana, the ritual stone that is thought to have served as an astronomical clock for the Inca.
5. Disney location: Ramone’s House of Body Art in Cars
Real-life location: U-Drop Inn in Shamrock, Texas

In the 2006 film Cars, the fictional town of Radiator Springs is meant to be a neglected stop along Route 66. One clear connection to that famed stretch of highway is Ramone’s House of Body Art–based on the U-Drop Inn, a rest stop located in Shamrock, Texas. Its Art Deco design by J.C. Berry is easy to spot in Pixar’s re-creation; Ramone’s has a similarly shaped building and large spire (these can also be seen in Cars Land at Disneyland).

6. Disney location: DunBroch Castle in Brave
Real-life location: Eilean Donan Castle in the Scottish Highlands

2015-01-14-brav.jpg

Disney’s design team visited the glens and highlands of Scotland for its recent feature Brave, about rebellious red-headed princess Merida who wants to brake the shackles of tradition. They took inspiration from Urquhart Castle on the banks of Loch Ness and Dun Carloway broch on the Isle of Lewis, but the bulk of the design–the sprawling, rich interiors of Merida’s DunBroch Castle–were drawn from the 13th-century Eilean Donan Castle on Scotland’s west coast. Clan MacRae’s grand table at the center of the Banqueting Hall is the model for Merida’s royal family gatherings; the towers, stairwells, and turrets of the castle inform all the nooks and crannies the princess haunts throughout the movie.

7. Disney location: The castle of Arendelle in Frozen
Real-life location: Akershus Fortress in Oslo, Norway

2015-01-14-froz.jpg

From the traditional folk costumes to the stunning vistas of the fjords, Norway inspired the look and feel of the magical world of Anna and Elsa in Frozen. The castle itself imitates the 800-year-old Akershus Fortress in Oslo, drawing on its brick patterns and ancient stone stairways to create a royal feel in the snowy city. Castle interiors–where Elsa was holed up in her bedroom while Anna sang at the doorway–draw from the 1778 royal residence of Stiftsgården in Trondheim, Norway. The fictional town of Arendelle is itself modeled after UNESCO World Heritage Site Bryggen in Bergen, Norway, the only preserved (and still functioning) business district from the Hanseatic period. 8. Disney location: The Sultan’s Castle in Aladdin
Real-life location: The Taj Mahal in Agra, India

2015-01-14-aladdin.jpg

While Agrabah–a city of “mystery and enchantment”–is meant to be located near the Jordan River, the Sultan’s palace at the center of the Aladdin’s action bears more than a passing resemblance to the Taj Mahal in Agra, India. The Taj Mahal itself is not actually a palace, but rather a tomb for a sultan’s wife–which makes sense, since the Sultan of Agrabah in the film is himself a widower, while Jasmine, the film’s heroine, views the palace as a sort of prison.

Adorable Toddlers Dress Up as Fairy-Tale Characters, Make Your Ovaries Explode

WARNING: The little girls in these photos are so cute, they’ll make you want kids of your own immediately.

In the photos below, 2-year-old Claire and her 1-year-old cousin Chloe recreate their favorite fairytale characters, including Snow White, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, and more. Claire’s mom, Jessica West, sewed the costumes herself, found the backdrops and props, and brought the girls to photographer Myranda Josephson.

If we learned anything from America’s Next Top Model, it’s that modeling isn’t just about winning the genetic lottery. It’s also about skill. And according to West, her daughter knows how to work the camera.

“When I wanted her to have a surprised face in the Wendy photos, I just stood off camera and made the face myself,” she told BuzzFeed.

West’s technique worked — every single face is priceless.

Two-year-old Claire and her one-year-old cousin Chloe had a magical photo shoot, recreating famous fairy tales. Here they are as Snow White:

23 Photos that shows that Puppies doesn’t always have easy and fun as it looks like

Everyone loves little puppies. But that’s not actually always soo fun as it looks like.

Although they may look as if they are having the time of their lives with no worries, it’s unlikely that they feel as carefree as they look but these cute Puppies still have a lot to learn. For example:

You have to be very brave when you go to the vet

You can not just pick up and chew on whatever you want

Older brothers are not always gentle

Sometimes you have to stand up for ridiculous photoshoots

You do not know what are your possibilities

You’ve got to look cute, but does not always work to cope with hair

Going Up the Stairs feels like climbing a mountain

And when you get the feeling that you are stuck.

You still have not learned to control your body

As well as to balance

You do not know what to expect from the cats

To learn how to play, you need a lot of practice

No one takes your threats seriously

And W..! How can you mix me.

You are so small that adults sometimes do not notice you

Even some toys are too big so you can play with them

You get stuck everywhere!

You have still not figured out what the pool is

And the mirror

You grow up so quickly that you are favorite cosy shelf cannot fit you

Going shopping it’s not always fun 🙁

Cooks are just so underappreciated these days.

Such hard work snacking. Time for a nap.
